LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami head Sirajul Haq on Monday said Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) demand for early elections can turn the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government into a political martyr, therefore the JI opposes it.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan on Sunday had demanded early elections in the country, saying that taking a fresh mandate is necessary to strengthen democracy in the state.

While speaking to journalists after party’s consultative session at Mansoora, he said: “In case of an early election, the government will say that they were not given the opportunity to complete its tenure otherwise they would have done miracles.” Haq added that election should be called after the consent of every political party.

He said amendments cannot be introduced to appease a single person as it is not synonymous to democracy, adding that defying Supreme Court by making a disqualified person the party head is akin to murdering SC decision.

Responding to a question, he said that the government formed a committee for election reforms, but manipulated its recommendations in Senate.
