Around 2 mln people suffering from epilepsy in Pakistan

LAHORE: Assistant Professor Dr Shahid Mukhtar of Neurology Department at the Lahore General Hospital, while speaking to APP on Sunday, said that epilepsy is a common disease in Pakistan and approximately 2 million people suffer from the disease in the country.

Epilepsy is neither a mysterious nor an incurable disease; it can be successfully treated by regular use of medicine.Dr Shahid said that all government hospitals had proper medical facilities regarding diagnose and cure of epilepsy.

He said that due to illiteracy, the awareness level about epilepsy was very low in Pakistan. In rural areas, most of the people approach to pirs for treatment in case of epilepsy, he said.

A large number of people also consider this ailment to a consequence of something supernatural, resign to ther fate and don’t see a doctor, he said.

Dr Shahid Mukhtar emphasised said that epilepsy was a hundred per cent curable disease and any neuro-physician or qualified doctor could be approached to get rid of this ailment.

He said that treatment of epilepsy was a long time process and patients should not stop taking medicine without consulting their doctors.

He advised the people that in case of symptoms of epilepsy, the patient should contact a qualified neuro-surgeon so that proper diagnostic process as well as treatment could be ensured.

He stressed the need for creating awareness among the masses about this disease.
