ISLAMABAD: While backing up and appreciating Senator Hari Ram for going against an amendment in “The Elections Bill-2017” in the Senate, Former President Asif Ali Zardari Saturday also came out against the amendment which is supposed to rally against Non-Muslims.
Ram had also persuaded the House to reject the proposed amendment.
Senator Hafiz Hamdullah of JUI from Balochistan had moved an amendment to section 110 of the Bill seeking to make it obligatory for every candidate in an electoral contest to swear upon oath, a religious injunction regardless of his or her faith.
The amendment was not opposed by the Law Minister and Treasury benches paving the way for its adoption.
However, Senator Hari Ram of PPP protested against the amendment saying that it would force even the non-Muslims to solemnly swear the religious injunction that specifically applied to Muslim candidates and questioned the logic behind it.
After some discussion, a majority of Senators agreed with Hari Ram and rejected the amendment when put to vote.
Lauding Senator Hari Ram for his clarity and courage the former president said: “Hari Ram has upheld the Party principles with courage and conviction and deserves to be complimented.”
