Traffic police impounds 6,612 motorcycles

KARACHI: Karachi Traffic Police in its campaign for the mandatory use of helmet, commenced almost a week ago, impounded 6,612 motorcycles and fined 45,000 motor-cyclists for not wearing helmets.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG-Traffic) Imran Yaqoob Minhas talking to media here Friday said that absolute violation of traffic rules, particularly on part of motor-cyclists, had emerged to be the major cause of road accidents in the metropolis.

Often the major victims in terms of injuries as well as deaths were also these riders, he said mentioning that in the current year only 119 cases of road accidents were registered with 148 deaths.

“Eighty-seven of these deaths were those of motorcyclists who succumbed to their head injuries,” said the DIG.  In reply to a question, he said a phase-wise campaign was being launched in the metropolis ensuring strict implementation of traffic rules.
