Model Town report: LHC approves contempt petition against Punjab govt

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Saturday approved Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) petition, seeking contempt proceedings, for hearing against the Punjab government for not making the judicial enquiry report into the Model Town killing public despite the court’s order.

The petition has been filed over non-compliance of the court orders about releasing the Model Town commission report.

The court has approved the petition for hearing on September 25.

Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, Chief Secretary Zahid Saeed and Home Secretary Azam Suleman are respondents in the case.

The petitioners submitted that by not making the Justice Baqir Najafi’s report public the home secretary was committing contempt of court.

They added that a single member bench of the LHC had ordered the government to make the report public, but despite the order, the report was not being made public.

The petitioner pleaded the court to initiate contempt of court over not complying with the order. They further pleaded the court to direct the government not to alter the report and provide certified copies of the report to the heirs.

The Lahore High Court’s (LHC) on Thursday ordered the Punjab government to release the Model Town tragedy report.

At least 14 workers of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) were killed by the police during clashes near the Minhajul Quran Secretariat in Lahore’s Model Town area on June 17, 2014.
