LAHORE: Intellectuals and scholars, present at a roundtable talk which was organised by two think-tanks “Soch” and PINA, said that the solution of all unrest brewing in the society lies in pursuing the rule of Constitution. The talk was held at Punjab University (PU) Executive Club on Friday.
The intellectuals and scholars threw all their weight behind the supremacy of Constitution, and said that no tolerance should be shown towards amendments that deviate from the basic framework of the Constitution.
The talk was organised by think-tank “Soch” headed by Muhammad Mehdi and PINA headed by Altaf Hussain Qureshi.
Muhamamd Mehdi, a senior politician, said that in the past, not only the masses but also the international community were in a state of bewilderment over political instability in the country; nobody knew whether general elections were going to be held in the country or if it would be held hostage by malicious forces.
“In past, some intrigued to remove political leadership of Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto through unfair means but sooner or later, they had to be brought back to run the system. Same has to be repeated as without political leadership there is no way forward,” he argued.
PU Vice Chancellor Zaffar Moeen underlined the need to inculcate a sense of nationalism among the masses to cope with all sorts of turbulence. He said that the onus was on universities and think-tanks to build a “national narrative” so that people could channelise their energies and stand united against all adversaries.
Professor Amjad Abbas stressed on strengthening the pParliament. He asserted that the current chaos could be negotiated well if all institutions performed as per the guidelines spelled out in the Constitution.
Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Shami said that it was high time for PML-N leadership to thrash out a new strategy to save the party from getting dismembered.
Altaf Hussain Qureshi said that everybody should have a sense of responsibility to cultivate a new narrative by holding dialogue at various levels. Meanwhile, Col (retd) Ghulam Mustafa said that let the Supreme Court prevail instead of locking horns with it. “We will have to rise above personalities and pursue rule of legal courses,” he added.
