Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Mufti Munibur Rehman announced on Thursday that the moon of Muharramul Haram was sighted in the country and Ashura would be observed on October 1 (Sunday).

The meeting of the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee for the moon sighting was presided over by its Chairman Mufti Muneebur Rehman. Reportedly, the Muharram moon was sighted by the zonal committee in Islamabad.

Muslims accept the month of Muharram as one of the holiest months after Ramadan. They observe the month with fasts, prayers and self-reflection.

The month also includes an important day of Ashura, its tenth day, when Shia Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala in 680 in the Islamic calendar, with rituals.
