ISLAMABAD: Senate Standing Committee on Federal Education Wednesday in its meeting took strict notice of the fake technical and vocational institutes established in the federal capital.
The point was raised by Senator Azam Khan Swati saying that he noticed around three colleges in Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) which were distributing fake diplomas among students.
The committee meeting was held here under the chairmanship of Senator Rahila Magsi and attended by the Federal Minister for Education, Senator Azam Khan Swati, Senator Nuzhat Sadiq, Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, Senator Gul Bashra, Senator Sehar Kamran, HEC Chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, AIOU Vice-Chancellor (VC), Institute of Space Technology (IST) (VC) and other officials.
A strict action was needed against these institutions and they would be punished as they were projecting a negative image of the country to the world, said Swati.
HEC chairman, replying to the question, said that there were a number of fake institutions in different areas which needed to be banned, and suggested an in-camera meeting in which he would brief about these institutes in detail. The Senate body agreed for the meeting and suggested that the issue should be inquired and resolved through Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
Earlier, HEC chairman in his briefing said that HEC’s newly launched online degree verification system was functioning in a fair and transparent manner. He added that the HEC had introduced research culture in the universities and informed that in 2016, around 1,200 journals had been published and the number was high than many other developed countries.
“We are moving from quantity to quality of research papers,” he said.
Chairman National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) Rozina Alam Khan briefed the body about the recommendations made by the standing committee at its last meeting. She informed the body members that a PC-1 had been approved by the government under which the salaries of the NCHD employees would be enhanced to 15,000 by the start of the next year.
