KARACHI: The present-day Lyari ought to be known more for Kharadar General Hospital (KGH) and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SBBMU) providing exemplary services to the downtrodden sections of the society, said Sindh Governor Muhammad Zubair.

Talking to media Tuesday during his visit to KGH, functional since long in one of the oldest locality in the metropolis, he said that the two institutions were fast setting a precedent for others.

Highly appreciative of the selfless services rendered by professionals associated with the hospital, the governor said that social welfare and development sectors were among the top priorities of the government. “Factually they come just next to restoration of law and order in our priorities,” he said emphasising that the existent situation in Lyari stood as a testimonial to the very approach.

Zubair also said that role played by philanthropists and the private sector in the management of KGH, providing all needed facilities, either free or at highly subsidised cost, can also never be ignored. “Hospital administration, doctors and para-medical staff also deserves to be appreciated,” he said.

The Sindh governor said that government remained keen to substantiate initiatives taken by philanthropists in strengthening the healthcare and educational centres in mid and low-income localities.

He on the occasion also paid a glowing tribute to the law enforcing agencies for restoring peace across Karachi, including Lyari, which at one point of time was known for its notoriety, and gang wars in particular.

He said that coordinated efforts have made a difference and that the federal government, realising its responsibilities for the coastal city, has raised the development fund Karachi Package to Rs75 billion.

“Its implementation will be monitored through a management unit established at the Sindh Governor House so as to ensure transparency at every level,” he said.

The governor, accompanied by KGH President Bashir Jan Muhammad, Arif Habib, head of the hospital’s management committee Professor AG Biloo and CEO Dr Khalid Iqbal visited different departments of the facility.

Dr Khalid Iqbal in a detailed briefing informed the governor that besides a wide range of services the hospital had also started its nursing school which presently was under further expansion. “Our students have been qualifying the nursing board examination with flying colours and are a source of well-trained professionals for many of the facilities across the country,” he said.

Professor AG Biloo urged the governor to play his role in efforts to prioritise mother and child health standard in the country as this was crucial for the national development.
