KARACHI: The Aisha Bawany College remains closed, despite Sindh government’s assurance that the college will reopen on a priority basis.

The college was sealed last week after the trustees took to a lower court to seal the premises until its ownership is decided. However, the school administration and government officials petitioned the Sindh High Court to prevent one of the city’s oldest institutes from closing down.

The Sindh High Court on Saturday ordered the reopening of the institute suspending lower court orders that had directed the institute be sealed in accordance with the trust’s plea. Despite the SHC order, the trustees refused to open the college on Monday.

On Monday morning, college students protested against the closure of the institution.

Following this, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah ordered the immediate reopening of the institute keeping in view the student’s educational needs.

Sindh Education Minister Mehtab Hussain Dahar is reported to have said on Tuesday that a meeting had been called at the CM House earlier to discuss the entire matter. Among the meeting attendees were the advocate general and the education department officials.

Dahar also stated that the police and education department officials responsible for handing over the school to the trust will also be held accountable, revealing further that the decision to suspend an area SHO had already been agreed upon.

Dahar reassured that classes will commence beginning Tuesday at all costs.

A court hearing into the case is scheduled for September 19 in the SHC.  Moreover, a case has been lodged by the AG against the trustees for defying court orders regarding reopening of the institution.
