Govt increases BISP’s budget from Rs70bn to 120bn

ISLAMABAD: Speaking on a point of order, the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Chairperson Marvi Memon said that the government has increased Benazir Income Support Programme budget from 70 billion rupees to 120 billion rupees.

She said that fresh survey of BISP is underway and sophisticated technology is being utilised for the programme. She pointed out that a desk base pilot project has been started to collect data in four selected districts of the country, including Harripur, Sukkur, Nasirabad and Bahawalpur, where 7,11,000 households have been counted in the survey.

Also, in other business, the National Assembly was informed on Wednesday that the government is pursuing a vigorous campaign to create awareness on Basic Human Rights.

Replying to a question, Minister for Human Rights Mumtaz Ahmed Tarar said the campaign’s major activities include seminars and advertisements in print and electronic media.

He said the target of the campaign is the general public, civil society, researchers, academia, students, government functionaries and different segments of society. He said a toll-free helpline number, 1099 has been launched at Islamabad for Legal advice and assistance.

Parliamentary Secretary for Power Azhar Qayyum told the house that load shedding has been reduced to four hours in urban areas and five hours in rural areas. He said zero load shedding is being observed in the industrial sector.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Shaikh Aftab Ahmed also introduced “The Service Tribunals (Amendment) Bill, 2017,” in the house.
