City under security threat during Muharram

KARACHI: The suburbs of Karachi are under security threat as terrorists might target processions and religious gatherings during Muharram-ul-Haram.

It has been reported that the activists of banned outfits are present in Lyari and the outskirts of the provincial capital. These militants can also mark any area to attack before Youm-e-Ashur.

A senior officer of Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) said while talking to a private TV channel that the terrorists can hit processions and gatherings in Malir, Landhi, Korangi, Baldia Town, Orangi and other areas.

He further revealed that different workers of banned outfits have made their own armed groups after separating from their organisations, and are hiding in the suburbs of the city.

The official unearthed that the Pakhtun dominated areas including SITE Town, Ittehad Town, Manghopir, Landhi, Quaidabad, Korangi, Sohrab Goth and other places are on the hit list as members of Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) are present there.

He revealed that police and intelligence agencies have devised a fool-proof security plan for Muharram, consisting of four phases after collecting secret information.  More than 30,000 officials of police and Rangers will be deployed in the city, he added.
