Bahria Town Chairman Malik Riaz has pledged Rs one billion for the Rohingya Muslims of Burma, along with arranging land accommodation for the displaced, media reports have confirmed.

In a TV interview, Malik Riaz stated that if Europeans can welcome Muslims from other countries, why can’t Pakistanis help their Muslim brothers. He then announced Rs one billion along with an arrangement to accommodate the displaced Rohingya Muslims.

Later, he stressed on the need for collaboration between the government and the establishment to bring the Rohingya Muslim refugees to Pakistan.

On August 25, after Rohingya insurgents attacked dozens of Burmese police and paramilitary posts in what they said was an effort to protect their ethnic minority from persecution by security forces in the majority Buddhist country, a military campaign began.

In response, the military unleashed what it called “clearance operations” to root out Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army militants.

Almost 300,000 refugees have since fled over the border into Bangladesh’s border district of Cox’s Bazar, where they have given horrific accounts of the violence.

Survivors said the military was targeting civilians with shootings and burning of Rohingya villages in an apparent attempt to purge the Rakhine state of Muslims.
