- Ajmal says university administration yet to take decision on sharing students’ data with security agencies
KARACHI: Denying the presence of militant outfits in the University of Karachi, Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Ajmal on Friday said the varsity administration cannot eradicate terrorism and extremism from the society by itself as the whole country has been facing security related issues.
The statement comes after a former KU student Abdul Karim Sarosh Siddiqui was alleged to be involved in masterminding the assassination attempt on Opposition Leader in Sindh Assembly Khawaja Izharul Hassan on the first day of Eidul Azha, on Sept 2.
The VC denied the presence of any organised militant group on the university campus and said that the affairs of the university were being exaggerated in the media. The VC expressed pride in the students and faculty of the university, adding that the issues being faced by the varsity were blown out of proportion.
“The university will suffer if issues are portrayed like this,” he said.
Clarifying about character certificates of students, the VC said that no decision has yet been taken asking the students to submit character certificates and added, “We do not want to irritate students and their parents.”
“The security institutions are responsible for the security of the university,” he said, adding that the law enforcement agencies are monitoring the university while the administration would always be ready to cooperate with them.
The VC, while denying reports that KU would share details of students involved in suspicious activities with intelligence agencies, made it clear that the administration has not yet decided to provide the students’ data to security agencies.
Dr Ajmal also highlighted the financial constraints being faced by the university administration and stressed the need to issue funds to KU.
