Sindh Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah met with Sindh IG AD Khawaja on Friday in an attempt to improve the relations of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) with Sindh Inspector General, a private news channel reported.
Sources revealed that, during the meeting, the two officials discussed issues pertaining to the provincial police department.
A one-on-one meeting at the CM House was held between the two officials after months, where Sindh CM assured IG Sindh of his full cooperation.
Sources have revealed that PPP has tasked the chief minister to improve party’s relations with the incumbent IG.
Earlier, on Thursday, the Sindh High Court had announced that AD Khawaja shall continue to work as the IGP of Sindh, ordering the provincial government to hold discussions and bring reforms in the police department.
In its stance, however, the PPP government stated that they would continue their legal fight against the issue.
Commenting on the issue, PPP leader Saeed Ghani had said that the Sindh government would not be comfortable in holding talks with IGP AD Khawaja now that the high court has imposed its decision regarding his stay.
Ghani, while talking to a private news channel, said if courts will take a decision over keeping or removing the inspector general of police, then the provincial government should not be held responsible for the consequences, while adding the decision of transfers and postings should remain with the provincial government—as it is the one held responsible when law and order disrupts.
‘SYSTEM WILL BE AFFECTED IF COURTS START EXERCISING GOVT POWERS’
Meanwhile, Opposition leader Syed Khursheed Shah said that if the courts started exercising the government’s authority, then the system would be affected.
Shah, talking to media, said that courts can direct, but not dictate. “The matter of IG Sindh is related to governance, and it creates problems if the courts start using administrative powers,” he added.
The courts can work while remaining within their ambit, he maintained.
It is pertinent to mention here that, in April, the Sindh government had removed the IG, replacing him with an officer already posted in the province. While doing so, the Sindh government did not take the federal government on board, as it appointed another officer without waiting for the Establishment Division to appoint a new police chief.
Pakistan Institute of Labour, Education and Research head Karamat Ali and singer/activist Shahzad Roy filed petitions in the Sindh High Court (SHC) against the verdict, after which the court stayed Khawaja’s removal as IG Sindh.
The SHC, on Thursday, annulled the provincial government’s order removing Khawaja and ordered that he will continue on his post until completion of his due term.
