Survey suggests 1.5m children out of school in KP: report

According to the initial results of a latest survey, around 1.5 million children are not going to school in KP.

According to a report published in the local media, the survey was conducted by the elementary and secondary education department with the help of teachers in KP, in order to confirm the total number of students that are out of school right now.

Around 1.5 million children of ages from five to 16 years are out of school, says the report.

The survey was conducted with the involvement of school teachers, who visited children’s houses to gather requisite data of children up to the age of 16 years, in all districts of the province. The final report of the census is going to be published next month.

This data has been conducted in order to ensure more children are enrolled in educational institutions.

Article 25-A states: “The state shall provide free and compulsory education to all children of the age of five to sixteen years in such manner as may be determined by law.”

According to an official, all the children aged five to 10 who are out of school right now will be enrolled in government primary schools immediately, however, in case of unavailability of government schools, these children will be enrolled in private schools and all expenses will be covered by the government.

For children aging 11 to 16 years, an accelerated learning programme is under consideration since they cannot be enrolled in primary schools,” he added.

These children will be taught a five-year long primary course in two years, which will eventually cover the eighth grade as well.
