LAHORE: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to return from London on Friday, while his younger brother, Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif left for London on Tuesday to enquire about the health of his sister-in-law Kulsoom Nawaz. He is expected to stay there for four days.
Nawaz Sharif had departed for London last Wednesday to see his ailing wife, Kulsoom, who is undergoing treatment for lymphoma there.
After his return to the country, Nawaz will continue his ‘public outreach campaign’, launched after his disqualification by the Supreme Court in the Panama Papers case.
According to a private media outlet, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader will address a rally in Abbottabad on September 10, followed by rallies in South Punjab as well as Karachi.
Earlier, Nawaz Sharif had addressed a lawyers’ convention in Lahore where he continued his tirade against his disqualification by the Supreme Court in the Panama Papers case.
Following the apex court’s July 28 judgment, Sharif stepped down as prime minister and, in a show of public support, led a rally from Islamabad to Lahore along the GT Road.
As a result of Sharif’s disqualification, his National Assembly seat, NA-120, fell vacant. The PML-N has chosen Kulsoom as the party’s candidate for the by-election, set to take place on September 17.
In Kulsoom’s absence due to her medical treatment, Sharif’s daughter Maryam is running the electoral campaign in Lahore.
