KARACHI: The Karachi University’s (KU) management on Tuesday decided to share the record of its students with the intelligence agencies amid growing concerns about young individuals’ involvement in militancy and terrorism.
The decision was taken in an emergency meeting of KU’s Academic Council which was presided over by Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Ajmal Khan.
The meeting was also attended by teachers, deans, and the council members.
During the meeting, security matters of the varsity in the light of growing concerns that some young individuals, particularly former students, have been found involved in incidents of militancy and terrorism were discussed.
The meeting has decided to share the record of students with intelligence agencies in order to ensure the arrest of criminals and terrorists.
The decision would be approved during the next meeting of academic council.
The meeting also reviewed a proposal about police character certificate for students.
The university spokesman said that all decisions will be taken in consultation with law enforcement agencies.
Meanwhile, a similar meeting regarding security issued also held in NED University. It was presided over Vice Chancellor Sarosh Lodhi.
The meeting was also attended by security incharges and hostel wardens and during the meeting security arrangements of the institution, especially at the entry and exit points, were reviewed.
The authorities decided to enhance the number of CCTV cameras.
Earlier, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced that a security audit and verification of students would be undertaken in each educational institute “to ascertain if they are breeding terrorists” after it was revealed that a former student of KU was involved in an assassination attempt on MQM-P leader Khawaja Izharul Hassan.
Sarosh Siddiqui, a banned outfit Ansarul Shariah’s commander, was revealed to be a mastermind of the attack.
Police are conducting raids across the city to nab Siddiqui, who is on the run. Sources said several persons have been arrested in the raids, including an MSc student.
