KARACHI: Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh on Tuesday said that SMIU was setting up a primary school, vocational institute and a ‘Women Resource Center’ (WRC) at its Malir campus to empower the local community of Malir district, including Darsano Chhano and Gadap town of Karachi city.
He said this while inspecting an ongoing construction work of the two-storey building of the school, vocational institute and the WRC at SMIU’s Malir campus.
In addition to that, the VC said that in the second phase, the Department of Environmental Science would also be set up here at Malir campus, because this area was the most suitable for research work on the environment. “Our main objective is to empower local community by providing them quality primary, technical and vocational education,” he said.
“Also, we want to help local women to utilise their skills for a better life by providing them best learning and technical facilities,” the VC said and added that the vocational school would be comprised of four technical components including plumbing, general electrical, mobile repairing and television mechanics.
He said that they should follow the path of community service of late Dr Ruth Pfau, who had left her country and dedicated her entire life to serving the people of Pakistan.
On the occasion, the VC directed the departments concerned of the university, engaged in the development work at the campus, to expedite the work and chalk out a comprehensive plan. He advised that plan should be one under which modern and quality education along with latest facilities should be provided to students at SMIU’s above-mentioned school and centres.
The registrar, Planning and Development director, Finance director, deans of various faculties and other administrative staff of SMIU were also present.
