SC orders reopening of WCCs

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) on Monday ordered to open four Women Crisis Centres (WCCs) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) that were shut-down in 2010 after the government cited lack of funds for these facilities. The court gave the decision while hearing a case regarding the matter on the appeal of the government.

According to details, Peshawar High Court (PHC) had earlier ordered to reopen the centres after the women working in those centres petitioned for their reopening to which the KP government turned to the apex court to appeal against it.

A three-judge bench of the (SC), led by Justice Dost Muhammad, upheld PHC’s verdict and rejected the KP government’s appeal.  The justice remarked that “these centres need to be reopened as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) promised to empower women in the province.”

The justice also said that the PTI claimed that their party had the ‘largest female presence’ and it was about time that they did something for them. He also added that reopening these centres should not be a problem since the government had already procured foreign funding for them.
