The Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) administration has been facing strong resistance from illegal occupants including former doctors, nurses and paramedical staff to vacate government quarters using their political influence, an official at JPMC said on Saturday.

Some house officers, postgraduate doctors and office-bearers of Young Doctors Association have occupied 96 rooms in Doctors’ Mess and they were living here illegally despite completion of their courses or training. The administration has issued several notices to these doctors but they have plainly refused to vacate these rooms.

Official informed that Doctors’ Mess has been divided in two portions, one for families and another for single doctors. He said administration allots single rooms to female and male house officers and PGs who come from interior Sindh for further medical education in the institution. Unfortunately, these single rooms have been occupied by former doctors and management is facing resistance from them.

Similarly, few doctors, paramedical staff and nurses are also holding illegal possession of quarters at the Doctors’ Colony even after their retirement or transfer to other institutions. He said whenever the management tried to get vacated these houses from them they approach the court and also use political influence to pressurize the administration. He informed that as per law a government employee can stay in his government allotted home after retirement for only six months.

On other hand, some lower grade employees of the hospital have converted two-room quarters into multi-story buildings and they have rented these buildings for commercial purpose at Staff Colony. Unauthorized people have been using all the utilities of institutions free of cost like gas, electricity and water.

Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) Executive Director Dr Seemin Jamali said the administration has already got vacated several houses and quarters through anti-encroachment cell, law enforcement agencies and after wining cases in court.

She said a high-powered meeting will be held soon to launch a crackdown on encroachments, illegal occupants, electricity theft and other anti-social elements living in the premises of the hospital.
