Safe drinking water has become a rare commodity and is now a global issue. The dark side of the scarcity is that it is increasing the child death rate.

The P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) programme is a global initiative which offers P&G purifier of water sachets to various communities. This programme is very active in Pakistan. P&G has joined hands with HOPE, an NGO, in Karachi to distribute drinking water sachets to the city’s residents.

According to Claudia Manuel, P&G’s Communications Manager, the ongoing programme will last until October 2017 and is expected to reach an estimated 7000 people or nearly 1 thousand families across Karachi.

Dr Mubina Agboatwalla, Chairperson, HOPE, said more than 500 families living in slum areas of the city including Mujahid Colony have been contacted. A demonstration was recently held in Mujahid Colony.

As per the World Health Organization (WHO) statistics, 1000 children die every day from diseases (e.g. diarrhoea) caused by drinking contaminated water, whereas these losses are more than those caused by HIV/AIDS, which is a matter of concern.

Founded in 2004, P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW), has been providing P&G purifier of water sachets through community-based programmes. Demonstrations on the use of P&G purifier of water sachets are being conducted in Karachi’s communities. P&G has delivered over 12 billion litres of clean drinking water in 85 countries of the world so far.
