Yasmin doubts ECP’s independence

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate for NA-120 by-elections Yasmin Rashid raised concerns on Saturday over the upcoming by-polls and alleged that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is not independent and works under the incumbent government.

Addressing a press conference, she said that the party has not been provided with updated voter lists and are missing 35 blocks. She also said that the PTI has submitted five petitions to the ECP, but has not received a reply after a passage of 10 days.

She that the list provided earlier by the ECP had 330,000 voters, whereas another list provided later to her had 324,000 voters. “ECP claimed that 6,000 voters were not alive,” she added.

Yasmin also said that they have asked the election commission for an updated voter list, which is yet to be received. She also said that Kulsoom Nawaz is the ‘deputy chairman’ of the same company which led to the disqualification of her husband Nawaz Sharif from office.

” The same clause is applicable to Kulsoom Nawaz as it was to her husband,” she said.

The National Assembly seat in NA-120 fell vacant following the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif as the prime minister by the Supreme Court on July 28. In the general elections 2013, Nawaz had defeated Yasmin by a substantial margin.
