Bench asks SHC chief justice to hear appeals of convicts

KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) bench, on Thursday, sent the appeals filed by terrorists against the death sentence awarded by military courts to the chief justice of SHC, seeking constitution of a new bench to hear these appeals.

SHC bench presided over by Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto took up to hearing the appeal pleas filed by the terrorists who were convicted and sentenced to death by the military courts in Safora tragedy and other charges.

During the course of the hearing, the petitioners took the plea that military courts have awarded death sentence to the petitioners on different charges. And the family members of these death convicts were not even informed about the details of their cases.

The petitioners had asked the court for a permission to meet with their family members and a stay on the implementation of their sentences. They also asked for a chance to file mercy pleas in the light of the Supreme Court’s decisions.

SHC bench headed by Justice Naimatullah Phulporo, while recusing the bench from hearing the appeal pleas, sent the case to the chief justice of SHC.

It is vital to mention here that convicts Saad Aziz, Tahir Minhas, Azhar Ishrat, Hafiz Nasir and Asadur Rehman were awarded death sentence by military courts.
