3 day anti-polio drive starts in KP

PESHAWAR: A three-day special anti-polio drive will be kicked off in four districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) from Tuesday, August 15, wherein 0.67 million children will be vaccinated against the crippling disease. The special campaign will be conducted in Swabi, Buner, Haripur and Torghar districts of the province.

This was disclosed at a meeting held at KP Emergency Operation Centre (EOC). The meeting was chaired by EOC Coordinator Akbar Khan. Others present included: BMGF Technical Focal Person Dr Imtiaz, EPI Directors Dr Rahim Khattak and Dr Akram Shah, and representatives from UNICEF, World Health Organisation (WHO) and other partner organisations.

The EOC Coordinator was informed that the special campaign was conducted in response to virus transmission in Islamabad-Rawalpindi. He was also informed that all the necessary arrangements, including strict security measures, were being taken to ensure the smooth and successful conduct of the campaign.

A total of 2,379 polio teams has been constituted out of which 2,032 were mobile teams, 224 fixed teams, 113 transit teams and 10 roaming teams.

In addition, 3,384 security personnel have been deployed to provide security to the teams. So far, due to the pertinent efforts of the anti-polio team, no case has been reported in KP in the year 2017.
