At least two policemen were shot dead by unknown militants on Bannu Road at Kotli Imam Hussain In Dera Ismael Khan late on Friday night.
A police official said that both policemen identified as Yasir Shah and Nasir Shah died on the spot in the firing and the attackers fled the scene after committing dual murder. The bodies were shifted to hospital for postmortem. The police and other law enforcement agencies (LEAs) have started investigation into the incident.
Official said that both the policemen belonged to Shia community. Allama Mohammad Ramzan Tauqir leader of Tehrik Millat Islamia ( Shia party) when contacted said, “It is a move for resuming of sectarian unrest in Dera Ismael Khan. After a break of around one year, two policemen (belong to Shia community) were killed.”
Allama Ramzan Tauqir said, “There is complete coordination amongst general public (both Shia and Sunni), police force and armed forces for sectarian harmony in Dera Ismael Khan. We would resist all such moves aimed at creating sectarian unrest.”
Dera Ismael Khan, southern city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa having mixed Shia and Sunni population, from last one and half a decade, there was sectarian unrest as scores of Shia people were killed. A large number of civilians, mostly Shia people also fell victims to suicide bomb attacks.
Couple of years back, the government through traditional jirga’s succeeded in reconciliation and coordination between both the sects. As a result of such steps, situation remained peaceful throughout Dera Ismael Khan city and its surrounding areas.
