Senate pays tributes to martyred army officials, Dr Ruth

Senate on Thursday offered Fateha for four Pakistan Army personnel including Major Ali Salman who embraced martyrdom on Wednesday in Upper Dir.

Leader of the House Raja Zafar led the Fateha on the request of Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani. The House also observed silence to pay homage to Dr Ruth Katherina Martha Pfau, who passed away on Thursday.

The Senate chairman said Dr Ruth spent over 50 years of her life to fighting leprosy in Pakistan. He said she established a small centre in Karachi for treatment of leprosy patients. Owing to her efforts, Pakistan was declared leprosy free country in 1996, he added.

In 1960, Dr Ruth decided to dedicate the rest of her life to the people of Pakistan and their battle against Leprosy. Rabbani said in recognition of her service to the country, she was awarded Pakistani citizenship in 1988. Dr Ruth received Hilal-e-Pakistan award in 1989. She also received Nishan-e-Quaid-e-Azam in 2010.
