An ongoing hip injury prevents the World No1 from participating in the Cincinnati open. However, he hopes on taking part in the U.S open in New York later this month.

“Unfortunately I won’t be playing in Cincinnati as I continue my recovery” Murray said in a statement.

He also added: ““I always enjoy playing there and I look forward to returning next year. I’m continuing to work hard on the court with the aim of being in New York.”

Murray has not competed in any hard court tournaments leading up to the final major of 2017. This would definitely prove to be detrimental in his performance given that he is fully fit to compete in the U.S open.

He has been world no1 since November of last year, but because of his absence in the Cincinnati Open could help Rafael Nadal take top spot if the former World no1 reach the semi-finals.
