LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: The Punjab Traffic Police have barred the heavy traffic from travelling on the GT Road till August 11, and have directed the transporters to use motorway instead.
The move comes while former prime minister Nawaz Sharif is on his way to Lahore from Islamabad. Nawaz, travelling via GT road in form of a rally, is being warmly welcomed by his supporters as his cavalcade passes by them. They have waited for their leader since Wednesday, despite the hot and humid weather conditions.
Because of the heavy presence of PML-N supporters, it is expected that the GT road will remain clogged for the next two to three days. Some political pundits have even predicted that Nawaz Sharif’s journey to his home may take even more than three days.
The authorities have also directed public transport vehicles, ambulances and fire brigades to use alternative routes.
‘Welcome camps’ have been set up in towns and cities on the GT road, whereas the bridges and the street poles have been adorned with banners and posters in favour of Nawaz.
