- ‘India continues to indulge in ceasefire violations despite calls for restraint’
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Director General for South Asia & SAARC Dr Mohammad Faisal summoned India’s Deputy High Commissioner JP Singh and condemned the ceasefire violations by the Indian forces, a Foreign Office statement said on Tuesday.
The Indian unprovoked firing in Khuiratta and Karela sector on August 7, 2017, resulted in martyrdom of a 35-year-old citizen Munira Bibi in the Karela Sector and injury to Farena Bibi in Khuiratta. Despite calls for restraint, India continues to indulge in ceasefire violations, the statement said.
In 2017 to date, Indian forces have carried out more than 600 ceasefire violations along the Line of Control and the Working Boundary, resulting in the martyrdom of 25 innocent civilians and injuries to 110, as compared to 382 ceasefire violations in 2016.
The statement said that the deliberate targeting of civilians was indeed deplorable and contrary to human dignity and international human rights and humanitarian laws. Director General Dr Faisal urged the Indian side to respect the 2003 ceasefire arrangement.
He asked the Indian diplomat to investigate this and other incidents of the violations; instruct the Indian forces to respect the ceasefire, in letter and spirit and maintain peace at the LoC. He said that the Indian side should permit UNMOGIP to play its mandated role as per the UN Security Council resolutions.
