Lawyers’ community observing ‘black day’ today to mark Quetta Civil Hospital tragedy


QUETTA: The lawyers’ community is observing ‘black day’ today to commemorate the first anniversary of the August 8, 2016 Civil Hospital suicide bombing, which resulted in the death of at least 73 people, of which 56 were lawyers.

Balochistan High Court Bar Association (BHCBA) also went on a three-day lawyers’ strike to mark the day. All lawyers would boycott their court duties, during the three-day strike, according to reports. A strike has also been called by Awami National Party (ANP) in various cities including Chaman, Ziarat, Zhob, Pishin and Musakhel, to express solidarity with the families of the deceased and the lawyers’ community.

All businesses will be closed for three days, throughout the city, including markets and educational institutes.

In a recent development, the Supreme Court took suo motu notice of the tragedy, and the three-member bench, headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, inquired the Baluchistan government as to why there was no development regarding investigation, on who was behind the deadly attack.
