LAHORE: A local has filed a plea against the nomination of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as the interim prime minister in Supreme Court (SC) Lahore registry.

The plea was filed by a local, Syed Mahmood Akhtar Naqvi in which it was argued that Shahid Khaqan cannot be nominated as a prospective candidate for premiership since he is the owner of Air Blue Co. and a businessman. It is also said in the plea that cases have already been filed against him in National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

Earlier, Shahid Khaqan said that anyone can register a petition against him if they so want. He also said he has been in politics for the last 30 years and has declared all of his assets.

Parliament will conduct a meeting on Tuesday to elect the interim prime minister to hold the office for the next 45 days until the next Prime Minister is elected. Shahbaz Sharif has to enter the Parliament first by contesting the seat vacated by Nawaz Sharif.

Supreme Court in a landmark verdict ousted Nawaz Sharif on charges of corruption against him and his family. It was the 15th time that a sitting prime minister of Pakistan was ousted before completing a full term in the country’s 70 years’ turbulent history.
