Imran Khan’s Camelot

And how he proposes to make it too

What Imran Khan promised in his “Thanksgiving Day” speech was nothing short of God’s plenty. He was going to create a welfare state, end poverty and unemployment, bring huge foreign investment and introduce merit based employment. Among those sitting around him on the dais were some of the old sinners who willingly served under administrations that Khan considers highly corrupt. There were others who spent tens of millions of rupees to win their seats in violation of the election rules. With Imran Khan in power, everybody in the government would be honest, he claimed. This was indicative of an undemocratic and authoritarian streak in the PTI chief. This explains Pervez Musharraf’s fondness for him.

The limits of what an all-powerful leader can achieve is illustrated by Imran Khan’s failure to introduce what he promised would be “a new model of true party polls in line with true democratic norms”. Criticising dynastic politics months before 2013 elections, Khan said traditional political parties held dummy elections just to deny their workers the opportunity to get elected for any major office. Justice (rtd) Wajihuddin’s election tribunal ordered fresh intra-party polls and the suspension of the basic membership of Jahangir Tareen, Aleem Khan and Pervez Khattak after serious irregularities were detected during the election process. Wajihuddin had to leave. Imran Khan’s insistence on nominating major leaders led to the resignation of Tasneem Noorani, the next election commissioner chosen by him. Four years after 2013 elections Imran Khan settled on a dummy exercise of type conducted by the parties he had lambasted. If a powerful leader cannot set his party right how can he turn Pakistan into a country flowing with milk and honey?

Imran Khan’s alliance with JI, JUI-S and Tahir ul Qadri’s PAT and his nomination by the TTP as its representative at talks with the government indicates Khan’s ideological leanings. Most of these parties believe in intimidation and reliance on physical force in pursuit of their agenda. There are times when forces waiting in the wings use elements of the type to clear the way for them.

  1. Nothing will change, nothing has ever changed. Not until the people have changed their outlook and habits. We have a great example in front of us of the Arabs who brought revolutionary change in their habits and deeds when they became Muslims. When they brought such revolutionary change in them they became the most likable and lovable people one will come across. They were such a lovable and likable people that whosoever met them would like to become like them.
To bring a change in our system the most basic and pressing requirement is that we, the people at large, change ourselves exactly as did the Arabs. The most important change that we need to change in our outlook is that we should, become responsible citizens as did those Arabs and instead of looking towards a leader or a party to do things for us, we should organise ourselves to take our civic responsibility in our common hands and do what we can.
To organise ourselves we need to heed to the demands of commonsense i.e. to join hands with each other to meet each other regularly in the localities where we live. There are millions of people living from Indonesia to Morocco claiming to be Muslims yet we cannot see or hear them to have organised to come together to unite to work for their welfare and security. This is the reason of the ignominious sufferings they have brought upon themselves.
Those Arabs never left anything for others to do for them, thus did not have a dictator, ruler or any Mafia dictating them.
So the question is “Do do we want any change?” If we do, we need to start coming out of our homes to meet our neighbours in our localities regularly to organise ourselves to work for our common benefits.
However if we want to continue to go after a leader i.e. misleader or a party we can keep on doing so and see that our problems are not being solved as it has been happening since decades after decades.
By the way to be able to become responsible citizens, we must be prepared to give up the most common and lethal habit utterly rampant among us. That habit is “Arrogance”. How can any knowledgeable person ever forget that Iblees traded away Heaven for Hell only due to “Arrogance”. “Arrogance” is boastfulness. The opposite of arrogance is “Humility”. Humility helps people make friends. Humility will help people to come together to organise. Organise to become winners. Winners no one can make them, but themselves. Most leaders promise people everything but as we know from experience, give nothing. Do we not know that no one can do anything for us. No one. No one but ourselves. If we do not make any move nothing will change for us. Nothing.
