SECP chairman discharged from PIMS

ISLAMABAD: Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) Chairman Zafar Hijazi has been discharged from Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) after remaining in the hospital for three days.

The SECP chairman was discharged from the hospital on Monday after a five-member medical board declared that his condition was stable.

He was kept for additional 12 hours in the hospital as he showed readiness to undergo a coronary angiography earlier, but at the eleventh hour, he refused to do so, because of possible risk in the shape of procedure which can further compromise his kidneys functioning. Therefore, he was discharged from the hospital and handed over to FIA for further investigation.

The medical board, in its final report, declared him fit to be discharged from the facility.

According to the medical report, a copy of which is available with Pakistan Today, “The patient had comfortable last 48 hours, as he did not complain of any chest pain and had a good sleep last night.”

The report reads that hemodynamically, he is stable both clinically and biochemically. The ECG is also normal, but the patient needs coronary angiography and he was advised for the same; he was also explained about the risks and renal complications in case of angiography.

“His renal functions have improved reflected by a decrease in his serum creatinine from 2.03 to 1.8 mg/dl. He is no more complaining of dysuria also,” the report reads.

According to the report, the patient has a satisfactory glycemic control and has been counselled about his diet to avoid hypoglycaemia.

So, the report reads that in the light of above described clinical status the board is of the opinion that now Zafar Hijazi is in a position to be discharged from the hospital and can be followed on OPD basis with regular blood glucose, renal function monitoring. The patient is advised to be compliant with the prescribed treatment. He should avoid taking protein diet.

Talking to Pakistan Today, PIMS Vice Chancellor Dr Javed Akram said that Zafar Hijazi was discharged from the hospital, as his condition is quite stable now.

He said that the board advised angiography which would be conducted after a week as till that his health condition might further improve. However, to a question, the VC said that he himself was reluctant to carry out angiography right now.

It is pertinent to mention here that the SECP Chairman was remanded in the custody of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for four days by a judicial magistrate in Islamabad on Saturday.

However, instead of giving him into the custody of the FIA for further investigation, he was driven straight away to the PIMS due to his deteriorating health condition, after his appearance before the court.
