Shikarpur Police on Saturday thwarted an attempt to marry off a four-year-old girl to a 22-year-old man.

Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Umar Tufail said the police reached right on time to put a stop to this whole hideous episode. Police reached the scene after receiving a tip-off.

Police arrested the man’s father and the man called to consecrate the marriage. However, the prospective groom managed to flee the scene. The child was taken into custody by the police. The SSP said police have registered a case under the Sindh Child Marriages Restraint Act 2013.

The Act says child marriage includes any marriage where one of the contracting parties are less than 18 years of age. Those found guilty of being a part of such practice can be sentenced to harsh punishment for up to three years.
