ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairperson Imran Khan on Thursday said that the PTI is not asking for the premier’s resignation as he will be soon behind bars.
“We are not asking for Nawaz Sharif’s resignation, he will soon be behind bars as his room is being prepared in Adiala jail,” said the PTI chairman while addressing a press conference here.
Imran questioned the reasoning behind ‘threats’ from the prime minister and said the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) was made to facilitate Nawaz Sharif by enabling him to clarify his name and provide proof.
“Nawaz has threatened the Supreme Court and me. They [PML-N] talk of democracy, but when we talk about democratic principles, they threaten us,” said the PTI chief.
Imran further said that the prime minister had claimed he was ready for accountability and he went twice to the apex court and then to the JIT, yet the premier was “unable to clear his name and provide proof.”
He added that the documents presented before the court were forged and presenting forged documents before the court itself is a punishable offence.
“Presenting forged documents carry a prison term of seven years according to the attorney general.”
The PTI chief said there will not be any civil strife if the decision by the apex court goes against the incumbent prime minister.
Imran said the Panama Papers case is being tried in Supreme Court and to start street protests would mean going against the apex court and the constitution of the country.
“If anyone disagrees with the SC verdict, it would mean they are going against the court and the constitution, which is against law.”
When asked if the PTI and the PPP will join hands and form an alliance, Imran said there will not be a need to do that as “Nawaz will go to jail now”.
The PTI chairman once again repeated his earlier claims that the business entities of the Sharif family acted as fronts for money laundering.
NA should get ready to elect new pm:
Meanwhile, PTI leader Naeemul Haque has called upon the National Assembly to “get ready to elect a new Prime Minister”.
Addressing the media, Haque alleged that the prime minister produced fraudulent documents before the Supreme Court.
“The Prime Minister produced fake documents in the court. The PM House is the centre of all fraud,” he said, adding that the Sharifs were providing the apex court with fake info in order to make the JIT report controversial.
“The Supreme Court has no option but to disqualify Nawaz Sharif under Articles 62 and 63,” he said. “NA should get ready to elect a new Prime Minister.”
Pointing to “discrepancies in Sharifs’ documents”, Haque said the PM’s date of birth records in Dubai and Pakistan documents did not match.
Earlier on Thursday, PTI chairman Imran Khan tweeted that another emerging crime of the Sharifs was producing fraudulent documents before the Supreme Court to obstruct justice.
Khan further said the biggest crime was to treat the nation as dumb and with contempt.
