LAHORE: Soon after Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif took notice of the cracks in the Cavalry Bridge, the authorities started repairing the bridge, on Thursday, located in Gulberg, Lahore.
CM Shahbaz had ordered an immediate repair of the affected portion of the Cavalry overhead Bridge.
Earlier, news surfaced regarding the cracks in the overhead bridge.
According to reports, the bridge was facing dilapidation and it would lead to any untoward incident. This was also reported that at least five million rupees had been released for the repairing and maintenance of this bridge but despite repairing cracks on a priority basis, authorities preferred to construct fence wall at the bridge.
Insiders told Pakistan Today that some government officials had intentionally let the cracks of the bridge irreparable as they wanted to reward the contract to some of their favourite contractors by showing it as dilapidated. They further informed that the matter of cracks in the bridge was already in the notice of authorities which intentionally remained reluctant to repair it. “Though the cracks were minor and were easily repairable but instead of repairing, authorities kept on concealing the cracks by covering it with sand, dust and other material,” they added.
PML-N MPA Hina Parvez Butt said that CM Shahbaz had ordered to initiate an inquiry into the matter and directed the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) to undertake the repair of the affected parts of the bridge on an urgent basis. In her tweet message, she informed, “It is an important to note that the structure of the bridge is secure and only some portions developed cracks.”
Deputy Commissioner Office spokesman Imran Maqbool told Pakistan Today that DC Sumair Syed ordered repairing the cracks in bridge soon after the matter was highlighted by the media.
After an immediate inspection of the broken parts of the bridge by TEPA and C&W department’s officials, repairing work on the bridge had been executed which would be completed soon, he added.
Till the filing of this news, the repairing work on the bridge was in progress.
