KARACHI: Rescue work continued Tuesday (today) morning in Liaquatabad No.9 after a three-storey building in the area partially collapsed late the other day. Six people have been confirmed dead in the incident.
As per rescue reports, bodies of the deceased were recovered from the debris, while the 12 injured were moved to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.
No machinery had been sent to the site for nearly two hours following the incident. However, Deputy Mayor Arshad Vohra revealed that heavy machinery was not deployed to prevent further damage and fear of further casualties.
As per rescue officials, there is fear of several residents of being stuck under the debris.
Locals in the area are reported to have said that the building was old and shabby was in dire need of major refurbishment. The owner refused to get the structure renovated, which is why part of it caved in, they added.
In June, Sindh Building Control Authority issued eviction notices to residents of 354 unsafe buildings following the first monsoon spell in the city but hundreds of people continue to reside in these buildings.
