Indian hospitals to ‘cure’ patients in ‘Astrology outpatient department’

The Modi government in Bhopal has decided to introduce a ‘troupe’ of astrologers in government hospitals as part of their medical staff, arguing that astrology is a “calculative science”, with medical and health benefits.

The Madhya Pradesh government in Bhopal is planning to open an astrology outpatient department, wherein astrologers and such soothsayers are to provide consultation to visitors facing a myriad of problems.

The astrologers, vastu experts, palmists and proponents of “Vedic karmakanda” will delve deep into the horoscopes and lifelines of patients for three to four hours a week. The OPD is to be operational at the Yoga centre.

The MPSS director PR Tiwari outlined the methods the OPD is going to employ to The New Indian Express.

Like OPDs where junior doctors work under the supervision of seniors, aspiring astrologers will assist astro experts in dealing with various kinds of cases in the, what Tiwari called, “astro-OPDS.

Said experts are faculty members under three annual diploma courses for astrology, vastu and priesthood, started by MPSS a few weeks ago.

The students in this diploma courses will not only act as assistants to qualified astrologers in the OPD, but will also get hands on training in devising astro-based solutions for different problems in the manner junior doctors get from senior specialists in regular medical OPDS.

Tiwari maintained:

The OPD will help to establish that astrology is not hunch, but a calculative science.

In these outpatient departments, teams of experts and neo-astrologers will study the planetary combinations and changed reflected in the horoscopes of patients. The prognosticators will also analyse varied problems of visitors/ patients who come without horoscopes, sing the “prashna kundali” technique.

The astrologers will study the planetary combinations at the exact time the questions are asked to arrive at the right astrological solution.

It is difficult to say whether the move is progressive but the response to the development has not been met with support in online spaces, rather it has been ridiculed and disqualified from the “calculated science” status that Tiwari seeks for the practice.

Indian Twitter erupted in satire and jest.

Even Richard Dawkins was tagged to observe the spectacle.

Tufail Ahmad criticised the BJP government for the developement.

Despite the negative reaction that the move has received, similar OPDs are likely to spring up at 138 Sanskrit schools run by the MPSS across Bhopal.

We’re planning to extend the annual diploma course in astrology, vastu and paurohitya to the Sanskrit schools in form of two years diploma courses. The students of Uttar Madhyama (equivalent to Class XI and XII) at the 138 Sanskrit schools who enrol in the two-years diploma courses, will study the diploma course subjects as additional subjects in the years of regular Uttar Madhyama course.
