Authorities rescue rickshaw driver who climbed pole to protest against unjust traffic fine

LAHORE: Authorities succeeded in rescuing a rickshaw driver who climbed a pole carrying high-voltage lines near Ferozepur Road’s Model Town Katcheri early Sunday (today) morning threatening to take his life.

The traffic police had fined him Rs 1750 which he claimed to be unjust. Frustrated he climbed on top of the pole.

The man later threw a note stating that he was unjustly fined Rs1,750 by the city traffic officials which had resulted in his being unable to afford the medical expenses of his family, who were admitted in the hospital. He said he would take his own life as he ‘had nowhere else to go’.

After the rickshaw driver climbed the pole,  rescue and police officials reached the site promptly and used a crane to get closer to the person. Lesco officials also suspended electricity in the area to ensure safety of the person.

Following prolonged negotiations lasting nearly two hours, Rescue 1122 officials were able to get the rickshaw driver down from the pole. . He later told the media that he  belonged to Jhang and was aided by a friend to climb to the top who has since disappeared. The man was later taken away by the police.
