ISLAMABAD: Parliamentary leaders of opposition parties agreed on Friday (today) that the assemblies should be allowed to complete their terms.
Opposition Leader Khursheed Shah, was addressing the media after a meeting of opposition parties. He further said that the opposition stands united in their demand that the prime minister must step down.
He said the Panama case Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report has brought forward all charges against the Sharif family.
“The people of Pakistan and all opposition members want elections to be held on time and the assemblies to complete their tenure,” said Shah.
Shah further added that the opposition will respect whatever decision Supreme Court takes regarding the case.
The PTI leader stated that their party’s fight is not targeting any political party but is rather against corrupt elements in the society. “The PML-N is also internally cautioning the premier,” he claimed.
Jamaat-e-Islami head Sirajul Haq stated that there should be accountability for all since no one is above the law.
Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rasheed said that opposition stands united to uphold democratic values in the country.”
Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan leader Farooq Sattar and Qaumi Watan Party chief Aftab Sherpao also addressed the media and restated the opposition’s decision to support democracy.
A meeting of the parliamentary leaders of the opposition parties was summoned by Khursheed Shah at his chamber in the National Assembly on Friday (today) to come up with a joint strategy amidst developments arising from the Panama case JIT report’s submission to the Supreme Court.
Opposition Leader Khursheed Shah, on Thursday, said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif had lost the credibility to head the government; therefore, he must resign. Shah said this while addressing a press conference in Islamabad.
If the prime minister does not resign, the democratic values will be compromised.
Shah said that the PML-N was looking to confront the national institutions and judiciary, but how are they going to do that, he questioned. It’s not 90s anymore when Nawaz Sharif got away with the attack on the Supreme Court, which was very unfortunate, as PML-N has not left its policies of hurting the state institutions.
Pakistan People’s Party was labelled as a ‘friendly opposition’ in 2014, but, now, we will not be so friendly, he said. The PPP stands in solidarity with all the national institutions.
Commenting on the JIT report, he said that the opposition parties will discuss the report in detail at the next meeting.
The meeting, chaired by Shah at his chamber in the National Assembly, was attended by leaders of all leading opposition parties and FATA lawmakers.
On Thursday, Shah said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had lost moral legitimacy and should resign following the submission of the JIT report.
He added that the PML-N government should complete its tenure by nominating another party leader for the position of prime minister.
Taking a swipe at the leadership, he asked if they would again confront the public and the judiciary.
He also questioned why no action had been taken against the prime minister yet.
Shah said that Nawaz lacked the courage to confront the democratic political parties of the country.
