KARACHI: As many as five target killers, including a serving policeman, affiliated with Muttahida Qaumi Movement (London) were arrested in a raid conducted in the metropolis area of Korangi on Thursday night, claimed Counter Terrorism Department (CTD). The men are suspected to be involved in May 12 killings and other incidents of violence.

SSP CTD Munir Sheikh informed that weapons used for the attacks were recovered in the raid.

He said that during the investigation, the suspects confessed to killing 19 people, including five policemen, further adding that they used to receive directions from the party’s London and South Africa chapter.

Sheikh said that a serving policeman, Rizwan, was also affiliated with the group, adding that as many as six cases have been previously registered against the accused.

He informed that the department will carry out a thorough check of police personnel recruited during the time when MQM was in power in the province.

Meanwhile, MQM-London’s South Africa network has been reported to be active in the Karachi central jail, as Superintendent Hassan Sehto received threatening calls for making changes at the barracks.

As the barracks of the prisoners were changed in the jail after Rangers and police operations, MQM-London’s South Africa network became active immediately and the superintendent started receiving threatening calls.

Sehto says that he received calls from South Africa on a phone app and the callers identified themselves as Kashif, Danyal and Hajan Shah. The callers threatened to kill him if the ‘workers’ were not provided facilities.

Jail superintendent has written to Sindh IG for his security, while the IG has issued the instructions for investigations to CTD.
