A walk to create awareness about the rights of voters was carried out here on Friday, led by District Election Commissioner, Imtiaz Ali Kalhoro.
The activity also highlighted the importance of registering the vote. The event was organized by District Voters Education Committee (DVEC).
Speaking on the occasion, the DEC said in order to increase the number of registered voters as well as the turn out in the next general election, 2018, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had constituted DVECs in all districts of Pakistan.
He apprised that those committees consisted members of the government departments, non-governmental organization (NGOs), civil society organizations (CSOs), representatives of the political parties and the education officials.
Kalhoro informed that the DVEC Hyderabad had been organizing awareness sessions in different schools and colleges as well as with the NGOs and CSOs.
Sharing the figures of the registered voters in Hyderabad district, the DEC told that before the local government elections in 2015, 970,885 voters were registered in the district.
However, he added, that figure had now enhanced to 989,438 at present comprising 546,894 male voters and 442,544 female voters.
The ECP official urged all the stakeholders particularly the political parties and NGOs to come forward and help in registration of the eligible voters.
According to him, the ECP had identified 206 census blocks in Hyderabad where registration of the female voters was less than the male voters.
He said efforts were being made by the DVEC Hyderabad to enroll all the left out voters in those census blocks.
The walk, in which the official of different government departments, representatives of the political parties, NGOs and CSOs participated, started from the District Council Building and ended at Hyderabad press club.
