Accountability against PM under corrupt tax system not acceptable: traders

LAHORE: All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajiran (APAT) has warned that if the key objective of accountability in this country is just to hit Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif then the businessmen will reject this one-sided trial against one of the most popular politicians of Pakistan.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, APAT Central General Secretary Naeem Mir asked is there any judge, general, journalist, bureaucrat, or any politician in the country whose assets are in accordance with his income or he/she’s living standard is compatible with his/her revenue or salary?

He said that corruption is such money which is looted from any person, institution or state and which cannot be tolerated. But only to punish a single person who is also among the victims of this corrupt system, including the prime minister is not justified. In this system, everyone is forced to be corrupt. Hence, the federal board of revenue officials, who are themselves a part of the corrupt system, should launch an anti-corruption drive against everyone –against themselves, against me and against you, he added.

Naeem Mir also rebuked the PM for not initiating any reform in the system. If the institutions were working in a transparent way and vacancies were filled purely on merit then the PM would not have suffered this unfair and biased trial against him and his family, he observed. The accountability should be for everyone and no one should be kept out of this accountability drive, he suggested.

He suggested the opposition parties go to the public, as the final decision would be given by them who had the ultimate powers to decide their’ fate. The tradition of ousting elected prime minister unconstitutionally should be abandoned.

Naeem Mir said that there is no doubt the PML-N government has consolidated the economy by initiating a mega project of national significance, especially the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
