With the lawyer as PML-N’s go-to guy, the battle shifts to legal arena

And it would be a long and ugly fight

The FIA has held the SECP chief guilty of misconduct by passing illegal orders and pressuring his subordinates to do illegal acts. The Agency wants him to be booked. Today the JIT will present its final report to the three member SC bench. The JIT could not quiz the Qatari prince as he declined to either appear in person before it in Islamabad or testify through video link from Pakistan’s embassy in Doha. The prince insisted that he could meet the JIT only at his palace or office.

The formation of the JIT was initially welcomed by the ruling party. Within days of the beginning of the enquiry, however, the PML-N leadership changed its position, first calling the quizzing as harsh and then continuing to add new objections as the proceedings went ahead. For the last two months a bitter political controversy has raged around the JIT. With the team handing over its report to the court, the dispute has entered the legal arena.

There is little hope of the issue being settled in the court any time soon. The PML-N thinks, rightly or wrongly, that it has secured its political position and can win hands down whenever the elections are held. What it fears is an adverse judgment from the court similar to the one delivered by the two judges of the five member bench. With a lot at stake the government had already acquired the services of prominent lawyers who reportedly briefed the Sharif family members before every appearance and debriefed them afterwards. Presumably the Qatari prince also benefited from their advice. Soon there are likely to be petitions in the SC against the JTI report and the FIA findings. There could even be petitions against some of the members of the SC bench. In case of an adverse decision, the PML-N government would go into appeal. The legal battle might continue for months keeping the country at an edge and the economy suffering from the effects of political uncertainty.

  1. Nawaz Sharif is up to his tried and tested tactics which to any law-abiding person may look indecent. His first Target is our Media. One can already see ‘swaying’ of couple of notorious channels. Sohail Warraich is the undercover man working from a channel not known for pro Pakistan sentiments. He very shamefully blamed the Armed Forces for bringing this CORRUPTION CASE to it’s present stage. Nobody should be surprised. Everyone knows Sohail Warraich and his ancestors. Let us see who all in the Market for bucks.
