ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) legal counsel Babar Awan on Monday (today) challenged that Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is not eligible to hear contempt of court cases while presenting initial arguments in the case against party chief Imran Khan. During the court proceedings today, Awan argued that only Supreme Court and high courts have the could hear the contempt of court cases.
A five-member ECP bench, headed by Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Sardar Muhammad Raza, was hearing the contempt of court case against Imran Khan.
Responding to this, the petitioner’s lawyer requested for some time to submit a reply regarding this. The hearing was adjourned until July 19.
Speaking to the media, PTI’s Spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry stated that PTI’s legal counsel’s arguments of party’s legal counsel are based on technical points and that the party wants ECP to accept their plea.
Awan added to this by remarking that PTI’s legal counsel had filed a ‘lawful answer’.
“There is no case in which Imran Khan can be disqualified from contesting elections,” he claimed. “There is a lot of difference between Imran Khan and Nawaz Sharif. Imran Khan’s family is not facing any corruption charges.”
PML-N’s Daniyal Aziz while talking to the media lashed out that Imran Khan had repeatedly failed to submit reply in cases against him and that he continues to attack state institutions, PM House, ECP and expects that no action will be taken against him.
ECP is a subsidiary of PML N. It is for such violations of law Nawaz Sharif will no more fall in the category of SADIQ and AMIN.
