PTI now questions top poll body’s impartiality

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has alleged the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) of biasedness and prejudice while dealing with the party’s accounts, and what it believe turning a ‘blind eye’ from the asset details of other political parties.

The party submitted a written reply in the disqualification case against PTI Chairman Imran Khan and General Secretary Jehangir Khan Tareen. The petition against the PTI leaders was filed by senior PML-N leader Hanif Abbasi who in his petition has accused the two of concealing assets and offshore companies in their nomination papers filed to the Election Commission.

PTI’s counsel Anwar Mansoor took the plea that on the matter of the party accounts, the Election Commission has singled out the Tehreek-e-Insaf while the same ‘discrepancies’ in other parties have been ignored. In a relevant development, the Election Commission has submitted the record of past six years of the financial details of PTI to the Supreme Court.

Also ECP had submitted financial details of the Pakistan People’s Party, the Pakistan Muslim League-N and some other political parties. The ECP has also requested that the additional documents must also be made part of the disqualification reference against Imran Khan. The PTI said that the ECP was trying to declare PTI a foreign-funded party although it does not have the authority to do so.

The party claimed that the ECP cannot conduct a fair inquiry because of its ‘impartiality’ and ‘bias’ against PTI. The documents also include Imran’s certificate stating that the party has not received funds from a prohibited source.

In the PML-N’s petition, the court has been asked to direct the Election Commission for the disqualification of Imran and Tareen over tax evasion, concealment of assets and non-declaration of offshore companies.
