Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Chief Siraj-ul-Haq Saturday visited Ahmedpur Sharqia to condole with the affected families and asked the Supreme Court of Pakistan to take suo moto notice of the incident and conduct investigations.

Talking to the media, JI chief expressed grief over the tragedy and said the government is responsible for the poverty in Pakistan. He said the rulers could not bring reforms despite making tall claims. Progress is not made by making toll plazas, he added.

Furthermore, Siraj demanded the government announce an economic package for the people. He said it should take the injured abroad for treatment if need be. On the other hand, one more patient died at Lahore’s Jinnah Hospital, where six have expired in total.

Siraj-ul-Haq also heard the problems of the natives, went to the graves of the deceased and prayed for them. He said the death toll could have been reduced had the administration cordoned off the area and stopped the people from gathering near the site of the incident.

It is pertinent here to mention that more than 190 people have died so far as a result of an oil tanker explosion in Ahmedpur Sharqia just a day before Eid when people were scooping up spilt fuel from an overturned oil tanker.
