Political affiliations influencing appointments to medical colleges

LAHORE: Punjab government is relying on political affiliations of professors to appoint permanent vice chancellors in three important medical colleges in Lahore.

Professor Asad Aslam, Mahmood Shaukat, Dr. Javed Akram, Khalid Masood Gondal, Qazi Saeed, Professor Farid and Fakhar Imam have been called for the appointment.

A search committee has been formed for the selection of vice-chancellors at medical colleges. Committee convener will be former VC King Edward Medical University Dr. Faisal Masood while other members include Dr. Amir Aziz, Dr. Mahis Muhammad, Dr. Muhammad Amjad Saqib, and Justice (Retd) Khalil-ur-Rahman. The committee is expected to hold a session soon.

To obtain the seat of vice chancellor, the applicant would need full marks in educational qualification and a successful interview.

Sources have told that for appointment in three prestigious medical institutions of Lahore, applications have come from 36 different districts. And to obtain employment with these colleges, several senior professors are using their political affiliations. Sources have also revealed that Speaker National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq and a prominent person from PML-N have favourited some of their close relations for appointment in King Edward Medical University and Fatimah Jinnah Medical University. Whereas Dr. Farid Ahmad, PEMS Hospital Chairman Dr. Javed Akram, Dr. Qazi Saeed, Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal, Dr. Mahmood Shaukat and Dr. Fakhar Imam are also actively seeking positions in the medical colleges.

According to sources close to the Pakistan Medical Association, the process of decision for the search committee to make appointments to medical colleges is incredibly strenuous.
