–Tribal elders reject compensation money, seek justice

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday announced Rs1 million as compensation for each family of the victims of the recent Parachinar bombing attack, which claimed at least 72 lives.

The prime minister also announced Rs0.5 million for each person injured in the blasts, according to a statement issued from the Prime Minister House. The premier has already issued directions to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Zafar Iqbal Jhagra in this regard.

The protesters rejected the offered compensation, saying that they need to be recognised as human beings first.  The compensation was announced six days after the bombing.

A large number of people have been holding a sit-in at Shaheed Park, Parachinar for the last seven days to protest what they see as government inaction after the bombings.

MEDIA DENIED COVERAGE

Meanwhile, according to news reports, media persons were stopped at Chapri check post near Parachinar on Thursday. They were going to cover the protest that has been under way for a week now in Parachinar.

However, the protesters said they would go to get the media persons if the latter were not allowed to access them.

Former senator Allama Abid Al-Hussaini said the ban on media was disappointing. “The government is banning the media to conceal its negligence.”

The protesters have been demanding jobs and compensation on a par with what Prime Minister Sharif announced for the people killed in Bahawalpur.

The protesters had also demanded a visit from the army chief and the federal interior minister. The army chief had reportedly attempted to fly to Parachinar, before being forced to turn back due to inclement weather.

Until the approval of demands, the protest would continue, added the protesting members of the community. Several other protest demonstrations have also been held across the country, seeking justice and compensation for the victims’ families.

A few days ago, the prime minister had cut his trip to London short to visit Bahawalpur where 150 people had lost their lives in an oil tanker blaze. He announced government jobs for the heirs of the deceased and the injured, along with Rs1 million aid for each injured and Rs2mn each for the heirs of those killed.

The back-to-back explosions occurred on June 23 as people were busy shopping for Iftar and Eid in the Turi Bazaar area, close to a crowded bus terminal in Parachinar, Kurram Agency.
